Diesel Mechanic in Hood River, Oregon

Powerstroke, Cummins, Duramax — Humberto has been wrenching on diesels for years. If you've got a heavy-duty truck that needs work, you've got the right shop.

Diesel Truck Repair in the Columbia River Gorge

Hood River is truck country. Whether you're towing boats to the river, hauling firewood up Mt. Hood, running a contracting business, or making the daily commute over to The Dalles, your diesel truck needs to work. When it doesn't, you need a mechanic who actually understands diesels — not a generalist who's guessing.

At Ortigoza Auto Repair, we work on the Big Three diesels: Ford Powerstroke, Ram Cummins, and Chevy/GMC Duramax. We've got the diagnostic tools, the parts knowledge, and the experience to fix what's wrong without throwing parts at the problem.

Diesel Engines We Service

Ford Powerstroke

  • 7.3L Powerstroke (1994.5–2003) — the legendary indestructible International-built engine
  • 6.0L Powerstroke (2003–2007) — yes, including the head gasket and EGR-related issues these are known for
  • 6.4L Powerstroke (2008–2010) — Navistar twin-turbo
  • 6.7L Powerstroke (2011–present) — Ford's in-house "Scorpion" V8

Ram / Dodge Cummins

  • 5.9L 12-valve Cummins (1989–1998) — the classic mechanical-injection workhorse
  • 5.9L 24-valve Cummins (1998.5–2007) — common-rail and pre-common-rail variants
  • 6.7L Cummins (2007.5–present) — modern emissions-equipped inline-six

Chevy / GMC Duramax

  • LLY, LBZ, LMM (2004.5–2010) — including the high-output LBZ
  • LML, L5P (2011–present) — modern emissions Duramax

Common Diesel Repairs We Handle

Injector Service & Replacement

Diesel injectors get expensive fast. We diagnose properly before recommending replacement — sometimes it's a return line, a fuel pressure issue, or a single injector instead of the full set.

Turbocharger Repair & Replacement

VGT actuator issues, oil-coked turbos, broken impellers, and full replacements. We've done all of them.

EGR & DPF Service

Clogged EGR coolers (especially the 6.0L Powerstroke), DPF cleaning and regen issues, and DEF system diagnostics on modern trucks. We diagnose properly and fix the root cause.

Fuel System

Lift pumps, CP3 and CP4 pumps, fuel filter housings, water-in-fuel issues, and full fuel system service. CP4 catastrophic failures on 6.7 Powerstrokes and L5P Duramax — we know what to look for.

Head Gasket & Engine Work

The 6.0L Powerstroke head gasket job is its own legend. We do them right — head studs, EGR cooler delete or replace, oil cooler service, all together. Major engine work on Cummins and Duramax too.

Transmission Service

Allison 1000 (LCT1000), Ford 5R110/6R140, and Ram 48RE/68RFE service. Fluid changes, valve body service, and replacements. Critical maintenance for towing.

Cooling & Charge Air

Radiators, coolant hoses, intercooler boots, intercoolers, and coolant flushes. Towing in the Gorge stresses cooling systems harder than most places.

Diesel Maintenance Plans

Diesel engines reward proper maintenance more than gas engines. We can build you a service plan covering oil and filter (with the right oil), fuel filter changes, coolant flushes, transmission service, transfer case fluid, differential fluid, air filter, and the periodic items that keep your truck running 300,000+ miles.

Pre-Purchase Diesel Inspection

Buying a used diesel? Bring it by before you sign anything. We can spot the expensive problems — head gasket weeping, injector issues, turbo wear, frame and suspension issues — that could save you tens of thousands.

Diesel Repair FAQ

Do you work on 6.0L Powerstroke head gaskets?

Yes — it's one of the most common diesel jobs we do. We use ARP head studs, replace or delete the EGR cooler, service the oil cooler, and do the job in a way that prevents the same failure from happening again. Call (541) 386-0944 for a quote.

Should I be worried about CP4 fuel pump failure?

If you have a 2011+ Ford 6.7 Powerstroke or 2011+ Chevy/GMC L5P Duramax, yes — the CP4 pump can fail catastrophically and send metal debris through the entire fuel system. Catching warning signs early or installing a disaster prevention kit can save you tens of thousands. We can help with both diagnosis and prevention.

How often should I change my diesel oil?

Depends on use, but most modern diesels do well with 5,000–7,500 mile intervals using the manufacturer-spec oil. Tow-heavy use, idle time, or dusty conditions push you toward the shorter end. We can help you build a maintenance plan based on how you actually use the truck.

Can you diagnose check engine lights on diesel trucks?

Yes. We have manufacturer-specific scan tools beyond basic OBD-II — we can read DEF/SCR codes, regen status, injector data, and the rest. We diagnose the root cause rather than just clearing the code.

Do you do pre-purchase inspections on used diesels?

Yes — and we strongly recommend it before buying any used diesel pickup. We look for head gasket weeping, injector signs, turbo wear, EGR cooler issues, transmission health, frame and suspension condition, and prior repair quality. The fee is a tiny fraction of what a missed issue could cost.

What Truck Owners Say

★★★★★
"Highly recommend Humberto and Eric, a father son team that will fix your rig for a fair price. I took my giant shuttle bus to them, where other shops would have said no they said yes and got the job done well."

"These guys are not only mechanics' mechanics. They're incredibly kind human beings. My old 94 F-150 had limped in from Portland with what sounded like a dragging rear brake shoe — they fixed it right."
Evan GoldsteinGoogle Review

"He diagnosed it after 10 full days of different mechanics trying to nail it. After $2500 spent elsewhere, it only cost me $22 dollars!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!"
