All-Season vs. All-Weather vs. Snow Tires (For Hood River)
This is the single most important decision Gorge drivers make about tires:
All-Season Tires
The default tire on most new vehicles. Decent in dry and light rain, mediocre in heavy rain, dangerous in real snow and ice. Fine for drivers who stay in town and rarely see snow. Not recommended if you regularly drive Highway 35, Mt. Hood Highway, or commute over the pass to Portland in winter.
All-Weather Tires (3-Peak Mountain Snowflake)
The sweet spot for most Hood River drivers. These tires carry the 3-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) certification, meaning they meet severe winter traction standards. Examples: Michelin CrossClimate2, Nokian WR/Outpost, Bridgestone WeatherPeak, Toyo Celsius. Run year-round. Slightly noisier and shorter-wearing than pure all-seasons, but dramatically safer in winter.
Dedicated Snow Tires
If you regularly drive in real snow β Mt. Hood, Cooper Spur, or you commute over the pass β dedicated snow tires on a second set of wheels are the gold standard. Mount them in October, swap in April. Brands: Blizzak, Nokian Hakkapeliitta, Michelin X-Ice, Continental VikingContact. Yes it's two sets of tires and wheels; yes both sets last longer because they alternate.
Common Tire Sizes for Hood River Vehicles

When to Replace Your Tires
- Tread depth at 2/32" β legal minimum (use the penny test: insert a penny upside down; if you see all of Lincoln's head, it's time)
- Tread depth at 4/32" β recommended replacement threshold for wet/winter safety
- Uneven wear β feathering, cupping, inside or outside shoulder wear β points to alignment, suspension, or rotation issues
- Visible cracking in sidewall or between tread blocks β UV and ozone damage from age
- Bulges or blisters β internal belt damage; replace immediately
- Age β 6 to 7 years is the practical limit regardless of tread; the rubber compound hardens
- Repeated flat repairs β three patches on one tire is usually the limit
Not sure? Bring it by. We'll measure tread depth, inspect the sidewalls, and tell you honestly if you have life left or need to plan for replacement.
Why Wheel Alignment Matters
A bad alignment will eat $800 of new tires in 10,000 miles. After installing a fresh set of tires, an alignment is cheap insurance. We recommend an alignment:
- Whenever you install new tires
- After hitting a curb or significant pothole
- After suspension work (struts, ball joints, tie rods)
- If you notice the steering wheel off-center or the vehicle pulling
- If you see uneven tire wear
Most alignments take about an hour. Pricing: $90β130 for most cars and 2WD trucks, $110β150 for 4WD and lifted vehicles.
Typical Pricing
Pricing varies by tire brand, size, and what additional services you need. Typical ranges at our shop:
- Tire mount and balance: $20β30 per tire
- Tire rotation: $25β40 (or free with most services we perform)
- Flat repair (plug + patch): $25β45
- TPMS sensor replacement: $50β90 each (part + labor)
- Wheel alignment: $90β150 depending on vehicle
- Disposal fee for old tires: $3β5 each
- Seasonal tire swap (already on rims): $40β60 for the set
Tire pricing itself depends entirely on brand, size, and grade. Budget-friendly economy tires for a sedan can be $80β120 each; premium snow tires for a heavy truck can be $300+ each. Call (541) 386-0944 with your tire size and we'll put together a real quote.

Tire FAQ
Do you sell tires in Hood River?
Yes. We sell new tires for all makes and models β cars, trucks, SUVs, and lifted rigs. We can order any major brand: Michelin, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Toyo, Cooper, Yokohama, Nokian, BFGoodrich, Continental, and more. Call (541) 386-0944 to discuss what you need.
How much does mounting and balancing cost?
Typical mount and balance is $20β30 per tire, plus disposal fee for old tires (about $3β5 each) and any TPMS service if needed. Call for an exact quote on your specific vehicle and wheel size.
Do I need snow tires in Hood River?
If you regularly drive over Mt. Hood, up Highway 35 to Parkdale, or in heavy snow conditions: yes. Dedicated snow tires or severe-snow-rated all-weather tires (with the 3-peak mountain snowflake symbol) are dramatically safer than all-season tires in real winter. See our winter car prep guide for more.
How much does a wheel alignment cost?
$90β130 for most cars and 2WD trucks. $110β150 for 4WD trucks and lifted vehicles. Most alignments take about an hour. We recommend an alignment whenever you install new tires.
How often should I rotate my tires?
Every 5,000β8,000 miles, or roughly every other oil change. Critical for AWD vehicles like Subarus β mismatched tire wear stresses the AWD driveline and can cause expensive damage.
Can you fix a flat tire?
Yes, when it's safely repairable. Punctures in the tread area smaller than 1/4 inch and not too close to the sidewall can usually be plug-and-patched ($25β45). Sidewall damage, large punctures, or punctures very close to the shoulder require replacement for safety reasons.
How do I know when I need new tires?
Replace at 2/32" tread depth (legal minimum) β better to plan for replacement at 4/32" for wet/winter safety. Also replace if you see uneven wear, sidewall cracks, bulges, or if the tires are more than 6β7 years old regardless of tread. Bring it by and we'll measure.
What tire size fits my vehicle?
Look for the placard inside the driver door jamb β it lists OEM tire size. Or check your owner's manual. Common sizes in the Gorge: Subaru Outback 225/65R17, Forester 225/55R18, Tacoma 265/70R16, F-150 265/70R17. Tell us your year/make/model and we'll confirm.
Do I have to buy four tires at the same time?
For Subarus and other AWD vehicles, yes β mismatched tire wear can damage the differential and transfer case. For 2WD vehicles you can replace in pairs (always axle pairs β both fronts or both rears together), though all four at once is ideal for even wear long-term.
Do you offer used tires?
We focus on new tires for safety reasons β used tires have unknown history (age, prior patches, internal damage from impacts). For most customers a budget new tire is a better choice. Call us if you're in a tight spot and we'll discuss options.
Can I bring my own tires for you to install?
Yes. We can mount and balance customer-supplied tires. Mount and balance pricing is the same ($20β30 per tire) regardless of where you sourced the tires.
