Timing Belt Replacement
in Hood River, Oregon
Don't wait for a snapped timing belt to destroy your engine. We replace timing belts the right way β with the water pump, tensioner, idlers, and seals all done together.
When to Replace Your Timing Belt
Most manufacturers recommend timing belt replacement between 60,000 and 105,000 miles. If you don't know when yours was last replaced, the answer is "now" β a snapped timing belt on an interference engine destroys the engine. The repair is dramatically cheaper than the consequences.
Common timing belt intervals:
- Subaru EJ-series (Outback, Forester, Impreza, Legacy) β every 105,000 miles
- Honda V6 (Pilot, Odyssey, Accord, Ridgeline) β every 105,000 miles
- Toyota V6 (older 4Runner, Tacoma, T100, Sequoia) β every 90,000 miles
- Audi/VW 1.8T, 2.0T older models β every 75,000-105,000 miles
- Older Mitsubishi, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai β varies, typically 60-90k miles
Modern engines mostly use timing chains instead, which last the life of the engine β but plenty of older Subarus, Hondas, and Toyotas in the Gorge are still on belts.
Symptoms of a Failing Timing Belt
- Ticking or slapping noise from the front of the engine
- Engine misfires or rough idle
- Oil leaking from the front of the engine (failed timing cover seal or cam seal)
- Coolant leak from the water pump (often replaced with the timing belt)
- Engine won't start (belt has snapped)

What's Included in Our Timing Belt Service
Doing a timing belt without replacing the surrounding components is a false economy. The timing belt area is buried β getting in once costs money in labor; you don't want to do it twice. Our standard timing belt service includes:
- Timing belt β OEM or equivalent quality
- Water pump β driven by the timing belt; if it leaks later you're back in for the same labor
- Belt tensioner β wears at the same rate as the belt
- Idler pulleys β same wear pattern
- Cam seals and front crank seal β easy to do while open, expensive to redo later
- Thermostat β small part, eliminates a future visit
- Coolant flush and refill β drained anyway for the water pump
- Drive (serpentine) belt β replaced if worn

Don't Wait Until It Snaps
The cost of a timing belt service is a fraction of the cost of a destroyed engine. If you're past the recommended interval β or you don't know when it was last done β bring it in. We'll inspect what's there, give you a real quote, and do the job right.

FAQ
How often should I replace my timing belt?
Most manufacturers recommend 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Subaru EJ engines: 105,000. Honda V6: 105,000. Toyota V6: 90,000. If you do not know when yours was last replaced, replace it now.
What happens if my timing belt breaks?
On most modern engines (called interference engines), a snapped timing belt causes the pistons to crash into the valves. This bends valves, damages cylinder heads, and can total the engine. Replacement before failure is dramatically cheaper.
Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt?
Yes β almost always. The water pump is driven by the timing belt, and you have to remove the belt to replace the pump. Doing them together saves you a second labor charge later.
How long does timing belt replacement take?
Most timing belt jobs take 1-2 days at our shop. Some V6 engines and Subaru engines with extra components may take longer.
How much does timing belt replacement cost in Hood River?
Most full timing belt services (belt + water pump + tensioner + idlers + seals) are $850-1,500 depending on vehicle. Call (541) 386-0944 for an exact quote.
