When to Replace Your Timing Belt

Most manufacturers recommend timing belt replacement between 60,000 and 105,000 miles. If you don't know when yours was last replaced, the answer is "now" — a snapped timing belt on an interference engine destroys the engine. The repair is dramatically cheaper than the consequences.

Common timing belt intervals:

• Subaru EJ-series (Outback, Forester, Impreza, Legacy) — every 105,000 miles
• Honda V6 (Pilot, Odyssey, Accord, Ridgeline) — every 105,000 miles
• Toyota V6 (older 4Runner, Tacoma, T100, Sequoia) — every 90,000 miles
• Audi/VW 1.8T, 2.0T older models — every 75,000-105,000 miles
• Older Mitsubishi, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai — varies, typically 60-90k miles

Modern engines mostly use timing chains instead, which last the life of the engine — but plenty of older Subarus, Hondas, and Toyotas in the Gorge are still on belts.

Symptoms of a Failing Timing Belt

• Ticking or slapping noise from the front of the engine
• Engine misfires or rough idle
• Oil leaking from the front of the engine (failed timing cover seal or cam seal)
• Coolant leak from the water pump (often replaced with the timing belt)
• Engine won't start (belt has snapped)

What's Included in Our Timing Belt Service

Doing a timing belt without replacing the surrounding components is a false economy. The timing belt area is buried — getting in once costs money in labor; you don't want to do it twice. Our standard timing belt service includes:

• Timing belt — OEM or equivalent quality
• Water pump — driven by the timing belt; if it leaks later you're back in for the same labor
• Belt tensioner — wears at the same rate as the belt
• Idler pulleys — same wear pattern
• Cam seals and front crank seal — easy to do while open, expensive to redo later
• Thermostat — small part, eliminates a future visit
• Coolant flush and refill — drained anyway for the water pump
• Drive (serpentine) belt — replaced if worn
