From head gaskets to CVT transmissions, AWD drivelines to engine rebuilds β Humberto and his sons have built their reputation on knowing Subarus inside and out.
Subarus are the unofficial vehicle of the Columbia River Gorge β and they have quirks that not every shop knows how to handle. Boxer engines, head gasket history, AWD complexity, CVT transmissions. The dealer will fix it, but you'll wait weeks and pay a premium.
At Ortigoza Auto Repair, we've spent years specializing in Subaru. We have the tools, the parts knowledge, and most importantly the diagnostic experience to fix it right the first time β and at a fair price.
The infamous Subaru head gasket job β particularly common on 2.5L EJ25 engines from the early-2000s through mid-2010s. We've done countless of these and know exactly what to look for: external coolant leaks, oil-coolant mixing, overheating, and combustion gases in the coolant. We replace gaskets in pairs, resurface heads when needed, and replace timing components while we're in there.
Subaru's CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) is reliable when maintained β and expensive when it isn't. We do CVT fluid changes, judder remediation, valve body service, and full replacements when necessary. Don't ignore that shudder at low speeds.
Older Subarus (EJ engines) use a timing belt that should be replaced around 100k miles. We replace the belt, tensioner, idlers, water pump, and seals together β the right way. Newer FB/FA engines run a timing chain that occasionally needs attention too.
Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel-drive is what makes them great in Gorge weather β but it requires properly matched tires, working differentials, and healthy CV axles. We service front and rear differentials, replace CV axles, and inspect the entire driveline.
Certain Subaru engines (notably FB25 from 2011-2014) are known for excessive oil consumption. We can diagnose the cause and discuss your options β from PCV updates to short blocks.
When it's time for a major rebuild, we do them right. Cleaned, machined, balanced, and reassembled with quality components. Your Subaru can go another 200,000 miles.
Regular maintenance is what keeps Subarus reliable. We can handle every interval β oil changes, fluid services (transmission, differential, brake, coolant), spark plugs, air filters, cabin filters, and timing components. Bring in your owner's manual or VIN and we'll build a plan.
Subaru repairs aren't cheap β but they don't have to be painful. We give you a real diagnosis, a real price, and we don't add work that isn't necessary. If your repair makes sense, we'll do it. If it doesn't make sense given the value of the vehicle, we'll tell you that too.
It varies based on the specific engine, what additional work needs to be done (timing components, water pump, valve covers), and the model year. For most EJ25 Subarus we're typically in the $2,000β3,500 range β significantly less than the dealer. Call (541) 386-0944 for an estimate specific to your vehicle.
Depends on the symptoms. If you're feeling shudder at low speeds or noticing slipping, often a fluid service and valve body work can extend transmission life significantly. If the CVT is making whining noises or has thrown codes, replacement may be needed. We'll diagnose and tell you straight.
2.5L EJ25 engines from the early 2000s through about 2011 are the most common β particularly the SOHC versions in Outback, Forester, Impreza, and Legacy. The 2.0L engines and the newer FB/FA engines have far fewer head gasket issues.
Yes. The EJ-series timing belt should be replaced every 100,000 miles. We do the belt, tensioner, idlers, water pump, and seals together β the right way. If you're approaching 100k or bought the car used and don't know its history, get it done before it breaks.
Absolutely. WRX and STI work is some of our favorite stuff β engine builds, lowering kits, turbo work, and the usual maintenance. Whether stock or modified, we can help.
